Many of the linux distros have a good guide on partitioning during their installation. Some of them like Mandriva (I use that one the most), even have an option where it will use a portion of the unused windows partition. The download for linux is oftem right on their site.

Of course quoting an article thats almost 5 years old is a good idea.

@Op, Most Ubuntu derrivatives have an option that should let you install the OS next to windows. Please make sure you have any important information backed up from windows, that its in a well defragmented stated and that you have a contingency in case something goes wrong.

Arch Linux on Samsung 840 EVO 120GB: Startup finished in 1.334s (kernel) + 224ms (userspace) = 1.559s | U mad windoze..?

What linux distro are you going to be installing? if you are going to use ubuntu, (I highly suggest this for a first time delve into linux) then you should just follow the step by step guide it gives you as you are installing. I only know one guy who managed to break something while installing ubuntu and hes basically a potato when it comes to messing with computers.

The first step to insanity is believing in your sanity.
