What PSU do I need to set up a 4 GPU mining system? Do I just connect the PCIe power cables?

He means that you're wasting money. For what you put into it you actually lose money paying for running the equipment.

Also, what type of mining system were you planning on running as that has an affect on the power draw.

yes, even with powerful graphics cards, mining at home for profit doesn't work out anymore.

It depends on the cards but you want 800 minimum, ideally much higher, like 1000-1500W.
Typically the optimum efficiency is around 50% of the maximum allowed power. Calculate how much energy each card uses and go from there. Remember that you will ideally be lowering the power on your GPUs, so a 1080ti will use about 150-200W, when they are capable of pulling 250-300W.
Get a seasonic PSU and it will commonly have 4 pcie 8 pins available. that will make it easy for you
