recover data from old hdd

hi guys, my old pc died (probably because of dust lol) and i had some old files that were my dads. He needs them now so i put the old hdd in my pc and connected it up. It doesnt come up in windows explorer and i havent formatted it or tried to. It comes up in the storage section of Computer Management as healthy and online. 

 

is there anyway i can copy around 400gb of data from my old drive to my new 2tb one? thanks in advance

Did you plug it in while the computer was off?

If you start the Disk Management, by searching for it or for create and format hard disk partitions in the start menu, can you see the drive there? Maybe all you need to do is select a drive letter or something to make it visible in windows explorer. 

 

There shouldn't be any problem with copying the data to a new hard drive if you are sure the drive is working correctly, it might take some time though.

Get a USB adapter set off eBay. It's saved my ass tons of times.

the option to change the drive letter is greyed out :/

 

So you can at least see the drive there, what color is the bar over the drive name? If it is black then you need to do a new partition of the drive to be able to see it in windows explorer.
