PC as media server

Let me start with fact that I am a noob when it comes to servers. 

I want to access media files on my Android phone from pc connected to same WiFi. Where do I even start doing that?

Most of what I found was related to creating a homegroup on windows but as far as I knon Microsoft has disabled homegroup now. Apart from that there were some paid apps. 

 

Privacy is also important as same wifi is also used by my flatmates. Ideally there should be so authentication to access the shared media.

Ples is great for it, can run on almost anything (see sig for mine, it so far has been tested with 4 simultaneous steams).  You can set passwords, accesses etc.


There are a few others that people have mentioned that I cannot recall atm, but I am sure they'll respond soon enough.

You can setup a shared folder or network drive with windows

My unRAID sever is built on a pre-built i7 6700 with 8 HHD's and 2 SSD's as cache I run Plex, jackett, radarr, sonarr, lidarr and deluge as a docker has been performing extremely well I have had 8+ direct streams running at one time depending on your case layout you can buy a 3x 5 1/4 hot swap bay to put your drives in and your good
