Computer Keeps shutting down

Ok, the PSU seems to have worked, its no longer shutting down and later I installed the GPU and it still works fine without crashing.

This is a computer that I have just built yesterday, I put it in an old delll desktop case and kept the power supply in it as well. But the problem is is that it seems to stop randomly, mainly under a bit of a heavier load, CSGO, and geforce now. The computer is still running but the screen will freeze and then go black. At this point I turn it off then back on. I am doing no overclocking on the computer. The power supply is a 305W psu (which I am upgrading soon for an RX580 that I have, just haven't put in yet because of the weak PSU). Any ideas on what this could be and how I can fix it?

It could be the PSU or it could be thermal related. Download a program like HWMonitor to check the CPU temperatures under load.

That was my second thought after the PSU, I think I did an ok job of attaching the fan/thermal paste, but the front mounted fan in very unreliable. But as soon as I get home I will check. Is there anything I should look for as well?

A case fan shouldn't cause the 2400g to overheat, it doesn't require a massive amount of airflow.

 

In terms of things to look for, it may seem obvious but make sure the CPU fan is plugged in to a CPU fan header and not just a regular fan header so that it increases in speed proportionate to the load.

 

Did you use the stock paste that was pre-applied or did you use your own? If you used your own did you make sure to fully clean off the existing paste?

CPU Fan is plugged into the CPU fan header, and I did use the stock paste.

Stock paste should do a good enough job so I wouldn't go taking everything apart just yet. I'd suggest putting some load on the system with something like Aida64 or Cinebench and checking temperatures. If CPU temp is fine during those tests and / or the system shuts down then I'd suggest it's the PSU that is the issue.

 

If CPU temp is bad, then I'd go about reseating the cooler and reapplying some fresh paste.

I've run the thermals and they seem fine if anything the CPU might be underclocked a bit. So I think that the problem is what you said it was and its the PSU, it is around 8 years old and its only 305W. I've put in an order for a EVGA 450W Bronze. Thanks for the help and I'll see if it helps.
