I'm not sure where to post this, I've googled and searched the forums here. I know windows has a linux sub system or something (or is getting it) i've seen something about an xfce port called sawn. I'm just wondering are there are any projects trying to port other environments to windows (native program, not running through a sub system or emulator) to replace the explorer interface? I remember this being a big thing back in windows 2k/xp days. (light step, talisman, etc.)

As far as I'm aware, there's nothing similar. I'd love to see a KDE environment for Windows as that's what I use in Manjaro. I honestly had no idea Swan existed but it seems pretty cool and I might have to check it out.

I have VMs for running linux apps and what not, I just want to replace the explorer shell for lower system resources and asthetics. I was great back in the day using light step on win2k wtih 64 MB or RAM. really sped the system up.

Both KDE and GNOME (as CyGNOME) were ported to Windows in the past. For some time, it was trivial to boot Windows with KDE 3 (?) instead of its default Explorer. (That's only a registry setting in Windows 95 and newer.) I don't know about the current status of those though. At least the KDE community still maintains a Windows project.

Write in C.
