Is clicking the battery icon in the bottom right corner too complicated?

You'll have to create a shortcut to change the plan first: https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/create-a-shortcut-or-hotkey-to-switch-power-plans/

 

Then when you have the shortcut made, right click on it, select "Properties", and in the "Shortcut" tab, you can set a hotkey for it.
