My bad I meant i5 7600k I fixed the post.

it really depends on how much the 7700K costs, if you can find one for 150$ or less? great, go for it i guess?, but if you want to spend 200-300$ then it's cheaper and much better to upgrade your Motherboard and CPU, for example a Ryzen 5 2600 and a B450 Motherboard would cost around 250-300$, and if you wanna go that route, I should mention that Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000) is coming out pretty soon.

Hello, I currently have an i5 7600k and I am considering upgrading to an i7 7700k

Not really worth the money.

YOu pay 200€ or something like that for the slight improvement.

Yes, you need a new Motherboard but that's a rather small price to pay for the performance you can really get.

Since you already have a decent system, why not wait another month or so and come back and ask what makes sense at that time???

I was wondering if it would be safe to use my 500 watt power supply if I get the 7700k or if I should upgrade. Thanks for the help.

Here are my specs:

You should upgrade the PSU to a higher end/better one anyway.

The wattage isn't a Problem at all, its the Quality of the PSU that is.

The old CX500 isn't a great PSU.

Look at the Tier List (the new one), TierB or better.

well it is used and the guy is asking 225 for it so I figured I'd offer him $150

That's still a really high price for a 4 Core CPU, even with SMT.

A similar modern 4 Core PRocessor is less than 150€.

For 150€ you can get a decent entry level 6 Core CPU, if you'd change the Board.

And that will last you longer than the 4 Core you are wasting your money on...
