I've currently got an i5 4440 cpu, how much better a cpu can I put into this board?

Look on Ebay for a used i7 4770 or i7 4790 (BIOS update needed).

I'm currently using a Gigabyte GA-H87-D3H board but I've had it for several years now and I'm wondering how long before I need to upgrade to something newer/if I need to upgrade at all. I'm fairly capable with computers physically, putting them together etc, but judging specs and compatibility I've never been able to figure out.
So.
I've currently got an i5 4440 cpu, how much better a cpu can I put into this board?

Is it worth upgrading the motherboard just to increase cpu speed/to get ram newer than ddr3?

If I do decide to upgrade boards, advice on specific things I should look for?

Thanks for any replies
