Hi guys,

I want to build a new gaming rig. I'm living in germany and the budget is rather flexible but I wanna feel that it's a good value and that it will last me a few years. I came up with this build and would appreciate feedback. Below I will give some reasons as to why I picked a certain component, if my reasoning is off feel free to critique it.

Reasoning:

CPU: I wanted multi-threading for my cpu and it was either ryzen or i7. And given the prices of i7s I felt that ryzen is the way to go. Reason I went for the none-X 2700 is that I don't mind overclocking the cpu myself and 2700+aio is about the price of the 2700X.

Motherboard: The big vrm heatsinks on tomahawk should be good for the planned oc and more expensive boards didn't seem to add much.

Memory: The tomahawk can support up to 3466mhz, so I went for the cheapest ram, that can do that.

Storage: This one is pretty up in the air. I'm unsure on the m.2 to hdd ratio and if I really need such a fancy m.2. I mainly store games on my pc, hardly any movies or other big files.

GPU: Not really set on that exact 2080. Also not necessarily set on the 2080. I just felt that given the rest of the build a 2080 would fit nicely in terms of value.

Case: Not really set on that one.

Power Supply: seemed good enough.

Any feedback is appreciated. If my build is way of the mark I would also appreciate a bang-for-your-buck 2080 rig suggestion.

No point getting 3600MHz Ram for Ryzen as it is a bit hit and miss if it will run at that freq. Stick with 3000 - 3200 imo.

Is that cooler strong enough? I read that 2700 overclocked to 4.2 ghz can draw ~170W (https://www.hardocp.com/article/2018/06/01/amd_ryzen_7_2700_overclocking_review/5).

Why do you go for that motherboard? Is it really worth 75€ more?

The Arctic Cooler is listed for TDP up to 210W on the Arctic website if you click on technical data.

The X470 Gaming Pro Carbon has a better VRM than the Tomahawk. Nothing wrong with the Tomahawk though but the Pro Carbon has a better chance of handling Ryzen 3xxx higher core count cpu's should you wish to upgrade in the future.

That sounds like a solid idea.

Why not an m.2 nvme? Is it not worth it?

Not for general day to day usage no. An NVMe is handy if you are working/moving lots of large files around etc. Things like Windows boot time and game load times are not really much different for the most part.
