Hey all first time posting here and I have a question. I'm going to be building my first pc, I have done some upgrades in the past on my current one but never built from scratch. So I have the parts picked out already and was wondering if anyone with some expertise could tell me if it looks good and if not what I should change from it. A note I'm not actually getting all the storage but I'm planning on moving the HDD/SSD's I currently have over so that's why there is so much. If you have any suggestions of how to cut costs or upgrade something that doesn't seem right let me know! I don't necessarily HAVE to cut costs but I'd rather not just throw money away for little to no benefit. Thanks.

What's this PC for?

Your motherboard could be a lot better, check out the motherboard tier list by clicking the motherboard in my signature.

Your PSU is pretty large for the task, you could go down to a 750 or even 650 and have some room left for overhead.

but you did make an Intel build, and an i9 build at that, so....

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Pc is going to be for gaming and video editing. Do you think an i9 is overkill? I swapped out the Mb for EVGA - Z390 FTW ATX LGA1151 Motherboard does that fit better? I choose Intel since I'm more familiar with the parts and when I upgraded a few years ago I heard AMD ran hotter then Intel and my room gets very very hot. I think I read that problem has been fixed over the years but now that I've had success with Intel in the past I'm the kind of person that doesn't like change lol.

Overall your build is pretty good. I've made some adjustments to bring down the price a bit. I'll detail the changes I made and why:

I changed you over to the Z390 Aorus Pro since it's cheaper and has better VRMs/Power delivery than the board you chose, making it a far better pairing for the 9900K since it's so power hungry.

I changed your SSD to the 960 Pro instead since it was cheaper by a few dollars and has better endurance rating than the EVO series. That makes it the better option for heavy read writes that will occur with video editing. Likewise I moved you over to a single 6TB Red Pro drive, which is more of a professional part instead of consumer, and is focused more on heavy read/write cycles, plus it was cheaper than the combination of HDDs you had.

I bumped your PSU down to the RMx 650w instead. It's a lot cheaper and it's more than enough for this setup, even if you OC it.

Onto your other questions: The 9900K is indeed overkill for gaming, but not for video editing, so that's the best you can get from a productivity standpoint (and from a gaming standpoint).

32GB of RAM should be enough for 4K video editing. If you aren't editing 4K, though, and it's only 1080p, you might be able to get away with 16GB instead (which is also the sweet spot for gaming).

The 2080 Ti is probably overkill, but for now I left it. You haven't told us what resolution and refresh rate you want to game at. The 2080 Ti would be a good choice for 4K 60Hz or 1440p 144Hz. If you're aiming for 1440p 60Hz or 1080p 144Hz it would make more sense to drop down to the RTX 2080. I know I haven't mentioned video editing yet in regard to this choice and that's because (assuming you're using adobe premier pro) anything over the RTX 2070 is considered overkill and has diminishing returns. So the GPU choice will boil down to your gaming needs only.

Thanks for the help! I am going to be also upgrading my monitor to most likely 1440p 144hz unless I can find a reasonable 4k monitor, I honestly haven't checked the prices. The main reason I was going for a 2080ti is because my mom got a settlement recently and I probably won't have this kind of money again for awhile, so my next build will probably be more mid range than the high end I'm aiming for now. The last time I upgraded to a 770 which is what I'm running now I regret not going for a 780 since I have been running medium-low graphics on most games for awhile now and my pc is so slow to the point I can barely surf the web so I want to make sure it's somewhat futureproof for at least hopefully 5-7 years. But again I understand the basics of the parts but probably not everything I should when building.

Any time :) So yep, 1440p 144Hz would be great for the 2080 Ti. I'd say do that over 4K in my opinion. The higher refresh rate is just so nice. Anyway, my build above should be perfect then.

One last question, I smoke so do you think the case I got will be big enough with decent airflow to get into and clean it somewhat frequently? My current case is quite tight and a pain in the ass to clean so I kind of started to slack on it, which I don't want to do with this build. Oh and I currently have a corsair h100 liquid cooler do you think I should cut the one I have now and clean this one out to carry it over? I'm going to give this pc to my kids and it won't stay overclocked which I think it's at 4.2 right now so it won't need the cooler it has now.

Yeah you can bring over the existing h100 as long as you can actually clean it well. Smoke is very difficult and is one of the worst things for a PC. The buildup of soot from smoke if you fall behind on cleaning can actually be conductive and short out parts. I've seen it happen before. The R6 is a decently sized mid tower and should be fairly easy to work in and clean, and it has a lot of panels and parts you can remove to clean, making it even better. It also has good airflow.

Yep the dust inside of my pc is disgusting and sticky as hell very hard to clean but I plan to clean this new one maybe every month or so. I've broken a few fan blades because I waited too long to clean it and had to scrape off the dust behind the blades with my finger and a napkin.

AMD actually usually has lower temps than most Intel chips these days.

What are you prioritizing, video editing or gaming? And, for video editing, do you use Adobe suite or others?
