So at an hour of gaming, my gpu reaches 80°c and my cpu stays at 82°c, are these temps safe? I know you don't want to exceed 90°c on anything.

is it better if i just keep my side panel off? My gpu hovers around 45°c and my cpu stays at around 62°c (with no side panel)

What processor/case/cooler? That's pretty hot for majority of chips

I5 3550, a old mid tower that has holes along side of the side panel, and the stock cooler.

I'm not overclocking, so i didn't see the need. Im buying a r5 2600, a b450 tomahawk, and a phanteks Eclipse p350x this summer. (So I'm working on a whole new build)

Might need a good de dusting or thermal paste re application. Older systems like that commonly have issues with the paste. The CPU temp seems a bit abnormal and is probably due to GPU heat spill, that's why when the side panel comes off it's less of a problem. What you need is more exhaust for sure.

I put cleaned it off and put some Arctic Silver 5 on it a few months ago. I cleaned the cpu and heatsink with isopropyl alcohol abd applied slightly more than a pea in the middle when I put the compound on.

Also, currently the one case fan is blowing out, i will flip the fan so it is taking cool air in, and exhausting it through the side panel

Yeah if it's only acting as an active exhaust then your CPU and GPU are reusing tons of hot air.

Now unfortunately, heat rises so your GPU will be a little bit cooler but if you don't have exhaust on the top, back, or even side panel it's going to be pretty similar to the temps you already have.

My computer is always on its side, the the side panel facing up. As you can see 1/8 of the side panel is covered with vent holes. My gpu actually sits right under those holes, so theoretically with positive pressure on the inside of the case, the hot air should go straight up.

I'll test it out and update how it goes with an hour or 2 of gaming

@CharminUltraStrongok, so I've been letting my game run for about an hour with the case fan blowing inwards and my gpu is fixed at 74°c and my cpu stays at around 78°c.

So a 6°c improvement for my gpu and a 4°c improvement for my cpu.

I turned my gpu fan up to 100% and something strange happened. After around 30mins my gpu stayed at that 74°c mark, but my cpu when up to 80°c. I think what is happening is since my GPU is outputting so much air, it is trapping the hot air around the CPU

I could just do the poor man's cooling method, sit the case upright, take off the side panel, and have a fan 25 cm away from the pc blowing cool air in. I've been doing this for about 30 minutes and the GPU temp stays at 60°c and my cpu temp sits at 55°c.

Besides the more dust cleanup on my part, is there any negative aspect of running an open-air system like this?

It's more prone to damage from spills, accidental drops (like dropping items into the case) etc. Otherwise it can't do more damage than running your system with high temps perpetually.
