Howdy folks!

I am looking for an upgrade to my rig, though I'm not sure when I'll get around to it. Probably the soonest will be this summer. Current specs are as follows:

Spoiler
  • AMD FX 6300 (6-core, 3.5 GHz base, overclocked to 3.8)
  • GTX 1050 Ti
  • 16 GB of DDR3 (2 x 8 GB, though I do have another 8 GB stick laying around, the clock speed was higher with two)
  • A rather old Gigabyte motherboard which I don't know what it's even called anymore
  • 500 W EVGA power supply
  • A 1 TB and a 4 TB HDD (tons of photos)
  • 500 GB SATA III SSD which is being limited to SATA II by the motherboard
  • Other than that, nothing fancy. Two 1080p 60 Hz monitors and that's about it

What I was thinking of upgrading to would be something like this (not concrete, just browsing after browsing around):

Spoiler
  • Ryzen 2600X or 2700
  • GTX 1660 Ti
  • 16 GB of DDR4 (above 2500 MHz preferably)
  • Some AM4 mobo
  • Hopefully not need to upgrade PSU? pcpartpicker said the max draw would be around 330 W, though I am rather new to this, so I really don't know if my 500 W one will hold.

I was wondering two things: How well does a 1660 Ti work for VR, and should I wait for third gen Ryzen? The latter I guess I just have to wait and see, but maybe someone knows something I don't.

Also I live in the US if anyone needs to know location.

Feel free to critique it and/or offer suggestions if you got any! Thanks in advance!

You should probably replace the PSU too even if you arent drawing its max. You should look into  getting Ryzen 3 once that comes out this summer and that might also bring anouncements for Navi which is AMDs next gen of GPUs.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I'm just curious, any particular reason for that, or just to be safe, have some headroom sorta thing? Or are there other advantages?

Not exploding seems like a good reason to me. PSUs eventually fail and if that's just some random old EVGA 500W it's also probably shit quality

You can still get the 2600/2700x, but definitely hold on until Ryzen 3rd gen is released as who knows if those might be an even better bang for your buck, or it will drive down the 2600/2700x prices further to your benefit.

No need to go too crazy for the PSU, maybe a simple 80+ Gold Semi-Modular like this Corsair TX650M  for sub-$80. 650W will give you plenty of headroom in the future should you wanna do further upgrades.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600  Heatsink: ID-Cooling Frostflow X GPU: Zotac GTX 1060 Mini 6GB RAM: KLEVV Bolt 3600Mhz (2x8GB) Mobo: ASUS B550-F ROG Strix (Wifi)  Case: Fractal Design Meshify C PSU: Deepcool DQ-M-V2L

Yeah, after looking at some "leaks" (or something) of Ryzen gen 3 specs, they seem pretty nice, especially something like a 3600X.

And in regards to the PSU, you are probably right. When I was building this rig, I just got the cheapest one that had enough wattage.

Would you recommend any graphics card upgrades from the 1660 Ti?

The 1660 Ti is probably one of the better value GPU right now, the RTX2060 is slightly better but costs at least $50 more IIRC
