Ok I've had my pc built for a couple of years now. It's a 6700k i7 with 16gb of ram and a 1080ti custom cooled.

Everything's been running fine and tonight I suddenly started getting freezes when moving my mouse in game. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling loads of things and it's happening on multiple mice and even when on a clean boot. Checked task manager and my pc is on 7% while idle and then when I move my mouse it goes up as high as 45% just on the desktop with no programs running. Windows explorer is the task that's using almost all of that power.

I've run malwarebytes, tried different mice and it happens in any programs I use as well as on my desktop. Nothing has been changed or altered at all it was fine and suddenly started and now I cannot get it to work no matter what I try.

The only workaround I've found at all is reducing the polling rate to 250mhz or less which is ok but it doesn't explain why it's suddenly happening or what's causing so much of my CPU to be used for moving my mouse when it's been absolutely fine for ages. It's not overheating or anything either.

Thanks in advance I really hope I can find a way to stop this without a windows install because my internet connection is so slow and if it means a fresh windows install I'm looking at a week to download some of my games I have installed at least.

what if you restart Windows Explorer in Task Manager?

Otherwise you might have a mouse tracking malware

I just tried that, doesn't seem to have made any difference. I've unplugged all devices including keyboard and tried with only a mouse and it's the same thing too. I just don't see how I'd have a mouse tracking malware when I've just been playing division and downloading nothing. Haven't even been on the web other than YouTube recently.
