Hello,

Recently, I've decided to upgrade my computer in order to get stable 144 fps, since I have a 144hz monitor. The problem is that I don't know a lot about building a pc, so I'd like to know if you could help me out! I play mostly games like fortnite, cs:go and league of legends, so I decided to start by upgrading CPU and RAM, so later on I could upgrade my GPU. My current pc specs are:

GTX 1050 2gb

i3-7100

MSI B250M PRO-VDH (MS-7A70)

1x8 GB (2400MHz - DDR4)

About the RAM, I was thinking about getting a G.SKILL Aegis 8GB (1x8GB) DDR4-3000MHz, but I don't know if the 3000MHz are worth it since the other RAM only has 2400MHz.

About the CPU:

ATX MSI B450-A Pro + Ryzen 5 2600

or

ATX MSI Z370-A PRO + i5-8400

or

ATX MSI Z390-A Pro + i5-9400F

I've seen a lot of people saying that for a ryzen cpu I'd need at least 3000MHz, so I don't really know what to choose...

Thanks and sorry for my english.

That's not completely correct.

There is a slight performance increase on Ryzen with 3000+Mhz memory, but it's not an absolute requirement in addition to being barely noticeable by a general user.

I run a Ryzen 5 1600 with DDR4-2133 and I wouldn't notice a difference with that compared to DDR4-3200.

You wouldn't need a Z series board with an F SKU processor, you can only OC a K SKU. If you got this could, get an H370M Bazooka instead.

However, you can overclock ram, so I recommend ryzen with another 2400 dimm and you can likely get them to OC to 2666 which would be nice. It's just a lot cheaper than the Intel builds so much better value.

Also, don't lock yourself into MSI boards, Aorus from Gigabyte is killing it this generation with value.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Maybe you don't notice a difference in day to day tasks, but for high FPS gaming like he's trying to achieve there will definitely be a difference with margins depending on the game, sometimes even substantial.

yeah, and the OP has a very high end GPU that will be push 200+ fps in all games.

besides, you can OC ram easily, you can get pretty much any 2400mhz stick to 3000mhz, with some extra voltage, and loosening the timings/

Thanks for all the comments/opinions. This question might sound dumb, but how many GHz do you think that are acceptable on a CPU? I'm asking this because prices vary a lot.

The GHz matters little, the performance is what matters. You can't compare clock speeds of AMD and Intel because they run differently, they're not the same. In terms of performance, Intel is super expensive for a small performance increase, but AMD wins in price to performance, and also multithreaded. The 6 core i5 only has 6 threads, but the ryzen 5 has 12 threads, so that helps a lot with streaming and other tasks.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

He said he wants to upgrade his GPU later though, all I know is that his target is 144 FPS, and ofc you can OC RAM, I have my 2400Hz kit OC'd to 3000Mhz, but that doesn't relate to my point at all, because 2400mhz kits and 3000mhz kits are 10$ apart or even the same price...

and 10$ is 10$ he can spend on something else, like getting a slightly better GPU (i.e. between fac OC and non-OC)

He already has a single 8GB stick, so there is no point getting another 8gb stick of 3000mhz.
