I've been wanting to build a simple website for fun with an actual domain and Namecheap stands out to me as a cheap offering. I also want to use said domain instead of the freedns I am currently using for connecting to my home servers. Is Namecheap "too" cheap? Their offering looks good but is it worth paying more for a potentially better product from a competitor? Also, is it even possible to use the domain for both a website on their platform and also point it back to my home server (I know a domain can't point to two IPs but perhaps there could be a redirect based on port?)

Yeah that is too cheap. Unmetered ssd space? get out of here. How big is unmetered, not described, but i'm sure there's a limit since this is a shared hosting.

Usually these kinds of service don't have many features, and running off an old base systems like sandybridge, the server itself cost nothing but electric and internet.

Or maybe a new system with multiple core running at very low speed.

Since you are on a shared hosting, they won't give you the specs, you only renting the space.

You can have the domain point to your house by using subdomain like home.mydomain.com.

You need a static IP provided by your ISP, if not get a dynamic dns service that will update your house IP whenever changed.

I don't need much at all though. Just a basic website and email to play with. About the dns, I'm already using the free dns from noip, I'd just like to go a step farther with an actual subdomain.

In that case it's easier to work with since you already have no-ip.

Set your NS server to NO IP (ask them for the address), and then in the DNS manager, set the default hostname A record (yourdomain.com) to the namecheap provided IP number.

Then in the dns manager click add a subdomain, ie. Home.yourdomain.com set it to Plus managed DNS (not free).

https://www.noip.com/support/knowledgebase/getting-started-with-no-ip-com/

In your PC install the IP updater, this program will update the server everytime your ip address changed.

I have little issue with it, but its not about their offered service or anything like that. Many scam sites use it to register domain names. So everytime I see namecheap.com as registering partner, I automatically assume site is mainly scam.

Who would you recommend, then?

Dynamic IP and Email is fine as long as you don't expect anybody go recieve it.

What do you mean?

Mails sent from a dynamic IP are usually bounced right away by any spam solution.

That's quite unfortunate. Is there any alternative you'd recommend?

Option 1: Get a business connection with a static IP

Option 2: Get a Mail Relay (ISPs sometimes offer them for their customers or an antispam gateway usually also relays)

Option 3: Get a Mail Provider.

I used Domainsite.com, which is now Name.com. It was cheapest with service and their own site designed the way I liked. I'd say even Namecheap is fine, just let your contact details show up when domain ownership is looked at. If there's no contact details, it makes any site look suspicious.
