As far as I understand it, 1 pump vs 2 pumps is to guarantee flow rate (and is ran in a series, pump -> pump -> (insert radiator and block run) -> pump -> pump rinse repeat) as water doesn't get "heavier" with amount of line in the system, its all about the flow rate of the pump.  I could be wrong, Im a noob to this but am waiting for my GPU block in the mail still before I do my first loop.

It depends on how large it is and what components you'll be cooling but generally a single D5 is more than suffice for most applications.

Series pumps help with pressure and having them in parallel increases the flow. What you want to look for in a watercooling pump is pressure as that is what determines how well it deal with restrictions in blocks.

A single D5 is usually enough for most setups. Depends on what all you're going to have though.  If you're going to have more than 3 blocks and 2 rads, that's about where I'd start thinking about going dual D5's, more for headroom than anything.  I have a dual D5 setup, and with 2 GPU blocks, a CPU block, a VRM block, 3 radiators and a couple of QDCs plus several angled fittings, I still get 1.1 GPM with the pumps on high. If I unplug one of them I get 0.7 GPM, which is honestly still fine. I actually run them at 70% unless I'm benchmarking, which gets me 0.8 GPM.

 

IE a D5 is fine unless you have an elaborate setup and want to make sure you have headroom.
