Metro.

Does it do anything different from the generic FPS/Survival genre?

If there's only a single pick then Bioshock.

Next would be Metro, Tomb Raider,The Witcher, Batman, Mirror's Edge.

The atmosphere of that game is intense. You should play both 2033 and Last Light. LL is properly the best one.

I'd say, Borderlands > Portal 2 >serious sam 3> max payne 3.

I started playing Borderlands a little while ago, but it was pretty linear, and similar quests. was about 2 hours in.

Does it get better?

Witcher 2 is a properly amazing RPG, that ranks pretty high on my list.

Case: Meatbag, humanoid - APU: Human Brain version 1.53 (stock clock) - Storage: 100TB SND (Squishy Neuron Drive) - PSU: a combined 500W of Mitochondrial cells - Optical Drives: 2 Oculi, with corrective lenses.

Yeah,play both of them.I played Metro 2033 right after LL came out and I got to play through them like it was a single game.

Bastion is amazing i liked it even more than witcher 2.

I heard it can be pretty scary at some pints.

There are some minor jumpscares i think, but nothing to really worry about. The game is not intended to be scary/horror, but more like dark and creepy.

 

EDIT: I hate scary games/movies, and this wasn't that bad. :D

personally when it comes to story LL is such a let down, fancy graphics, but story-wise fan-story that really put artyom out of character.

 

it's not the novel after all i guess :|

Tomb raider is amazing, Max Payne 3 was also quite amazing. Mirrors edge isn't bad...

The first Metro scared me more than Last Light.In LL you play alot vs people (god damn russians) and I really liked to stealth-play through it.

No,it's just the scary and dark atmosphere.Those mutants...

 

Also,+ for Tomb Raider from me!

 

The best with the best story and atmosphere out of those is Bioshock without a doubt.I played it 4 times already...interesting game mechanics,too!
