Hello, I am a PC gamer and right now I am playing Rainbow Six Siege, I am playing the game with around 90 fps, but with 144 hz monitor it is not what I want, I am mainly playing on low details and on 1920x1080p resolution. I have MSI 970 Gaming as motherboard it supports  AM3+ CPUs, I have AMD Fx-8300 3.3 GHz (Oc to 4.2 GHz), is it worth it to buy some other AM3+ CPU or is it better to upgrade Motherboard and CPU together? I want to game to run around 144 fps so I can use my 144 hz monitor, if not can you suggest me any motherboard + cpu combinations? And is Intel or AMD better for me?

Motherboard: MSI 970 gaming

CPU: AMD FX-8300 3.3 GHz (OC to 4.2 GHz)

GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1060 AERO ITX 6G

RAM: 4x HyperX 4GB DDR3 1600MHz CL10 Fury Series

Definitely not worth upgrading to another AM3 chip. I recommend upgrading to Ryzen, A lot of the first gen chips you can find pretty cost effective these days. Even a Ryzen 3 will perform better than the FX 8300 you currently have.

Intel Core i7 9700F / Cooler Master 212 Evo / GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER / 16 GB G.SKILL RAM @ 2666MHz / GA-B365M-DS3H / EVGA 500w PSU

HP Pavilion Gaming 15 / Ryzen 5 4600H / GeForce GTX 1050 / 8 GB @ 3200MHz

There's no CPU noticeably stronger than an FX 8-core at 4+ GHz for an AM3+ platform.

You should change your platform to something more modern meaning your motherboard, CPU and the RAM.

You should aim for a Ryzen 5 + B450 combo, you'll need new DDR4 memory though.

I meant if I really need to do it now, cause I was aiming for the CPU mainly and my budget is for new motherboard + cpu and not with ram.

There's no AM4 motherboard with DDR3 to my best knowledge.

What you can possibly do, is to flip those DDR3 modules (as well as your old components), to get a kickback from those parts.

An other road you could take, is to watch out for a littlebit older (possibly used) Intel solutions, like 6.th gen, that supports DDR3.

Edit: a board like this (https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z170-HD3-DDR3-rev-10#ov) and an i7-6XXX or i7-7XXX would be an upgrade IMO.

But buying new components that are 3 years old that cost as much or more than 2019 components doesnt make sense.

🙂

I think haven't mentioned at all, that it's a great way to upgrade :D but it's a solution.

Tho' I think a second-hand solution would cost the fraction of a new like AM4 based system with mobo,CPU and RAM.

If you want 144fps it's easier to achieve with an unlocked Intel chip.

That said, specifically R6S seems to be an easier one to achieve with either chip.

Looking forward towards other games, you might want to consider Intel.

Adding on to this, I would recommend the i5-8600K, i7-9700K, or i7-7700K (6c/6t, 8c/8t, 4c/8t respectively). For 144FPS, your GPU will also be important, perhaps upgrade it to a GTX 1660 (just released today) or a RTX 2060.

To clarify to OP, a socket for DDR4 RAM does not support DDR3 sticks. So you would literally be forced to do so if upgrading to anything newer.

The good news is:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
Type Item Price
CPU AMD - Ryzen 3 2200G 3.5 GHz Quad-Core Processor $87.99 @ Walmart
Motherboard ASRock - B450 Pro4 ATX AM4 Motherboard $64.99 @ Newegg
Memory G.Skill - Ripjaws V 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory $84.99 @ Newegg
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
  Total (before mail-in rebates) $252.97
  Mail-in rebates -$15.00
  Total $237.97
  Generated by PCPartPicker 2019-03-14 20:49 EDT-0400

RAM is very cheap right now. 85 for 16GB DDR4 @ 3000mhz is a great deal!

This is barebones on an upgrade path for 2nd gen Ryzen. The 2600 is a good step up, but this would certainly support that GTX 970.

The game is mainly running on cpu, because of the engine (same like CS:GO). GPU is only for better quality and it is handling pretty well on ULTRA.

I would agree with this. Also down the line you could upgrade your cpu to a new zen2 gen without having to buy a new motherboard

Be careful about the RAM kit, as it might not work at 3000 MHz on AM4.

I have 3200mhz ... ryzen loves ram above 3000mhz.

That is if the motherboard can handle it. Performance wise, it LOVES ram speed. However, sometimes the motherboard literally will not work with it, so there's no point in wasting valuable time trying to get it work if it doesn't work with reasonable voltages or timings. Also, in your opinion, since you said Ryzen loves ram speeds above 3000, do you think 2933 is fine too?
