CPU for server?

Go to solution Solved by Advent,

people who dont read the OP's OP. Im looking at a core 2 duo complete rig. a i3 complete rig will run me over $100.

Then go with that then. If all you are doing is data storage then cram as many large HDD's as you can like a few 4TB Reds in RAID.

Im looking at building a small homeserver and was wondering what my options are for the direction i plan to go. Im looking on ebay right now for used desktops because I could get a complete setup for about $50. all I would have to do is get a new case (probably a R4), a raid card, and some HDDs. maybe a new PSU if the wattage is going to exceed the original.

the piece im looking at has a core 2 duo at 3.00 GHz and 2GB memory.

from what I can precieve, it would be as cpu hungry as your mothers facebook laptop. let me know if there is something I am missing. where in reality I should go for the i7 like alpenwasser did with Zeus.

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/12089-zeus-fractal-r4-blueblack-internal-ut60-rad-by-alpenwasser-complete/

but after all he did mention "... exceeding useful specifications."

Im looking at building a small homeserver

What will you be using it for? VM's? Hosting game servers? NAS? If all of the above I would suggest that you build a decent one for future scalability.

This is what I came up with:

PCPartPicker part list

CPU:  Intel Core i7-3770S 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($293.98 @ SuperBiiz)

CPU Cooler:  Scythe BIG Shuriken 2 Rev. B 45.5 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler  ($42.05 @ NCIX US)

Motherboard:  ASRock H77 Pro4-M Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard  ($87.99 @ Amazon)

Memory:  Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($69.99 @ Newegg)

Storage:  Western Digital Green 4TB 3.5" 5900RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($159.99 @ NCIX US)

Case:  BitFenix Prodigy M Midnight MicroATX Mini Tower Case  ($89.99 @ TigerDirect)

Power Supply:  SeaSonic 350W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($64.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Total: $808.98

(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

NVM, Disregard as the OP already has their mind set.

CPU: i7-3930K @ 4.8GHz MOBO: IV Gene RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 1866MHz GPU: GTX 780 Ti CASE: Corsair 350D STORAGE: 2 x Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB, 2x WD Red 4TB
PSU
: EVGA SuperNova 650W DISPLAY: 1 x ASUS VG248QE, 3 x Dell U2414H COOLING: Corsair H100i INPUT: Corsair Vengeance K70, SteelSeries Sensei AUDIO: Sennheiser HD 280 Pro, ATH-M50s, Beredynamic DT770 Pro, Steelseries H Wireless

I too am also interested in this, currently my choice is an ITX prodigy build (really love the case and a small footprint), with an Asus H87I-PLUS (for the SATA's) with an i5 4750 (for game servers occasionally, VM's and stuff). Sub'd.

Prodigy is a great case. I love mine. also, this isnt my build log. Ill post it in the build log section when I being buying. right now Im just asking about the CPU, which is why it is under the cpu, mobo, and memory section.

What will you be using it for?

most likely just for data storage. maybe setting up a personal cloud that has not sensitive material in it. the far streatch would be a HTPC; I am moving around a fair bit and I already take my prodigy with me. so very unlikely it will ever become a HTPC.

Then you wouldn't need anything powerfull. A decent i3 should be more than enough. :)

No reason to dump that kind of money into a i7 for data storage. Even for heavy tasks like running a game server from home you don't necessarily need the core performance. This is one of the sweet spots for FX processors. You can spend $160 and get a FX-8320 and be loaded with eight cores. Tho for just data storage? You don't need a whole lot of horsepower unless you're steaming HD to multiple machines at once. Something like this for $57.99 (1/20) would be more than enough for a little file server.

Should have written "i3 or equivilante". An i3 isn't stronger than C2D depending on which models you're comparing. My point still was, that you won't need a huge amount of power. Buying a stronger CPU will increase operations like unrar'ing stuff. Where as most of the other tasks your machine would handle, will be limited by hard drives / sata controller.
