Currently my pc is 5 years old...

Configuration is:

i7 4790k cpu

Gigabyte z97d3hp ATX mobo

Corsair vengeance ram 8x2

WD 120gb sata SSD and 2tb HDD

Corsair VS 650 psu

GTX 760 Asus***

Cooler master k380 case***

I'm looking forward to upgrading the GPU and switching up to a new case along with liquid cooling. Nothing else, since I'm on a budget. But my questions are

a. Would this mobo support the newer GPUs like 1060 or 1660?

b. Is i7 4790k good enough to survive another generation of gaming?

c. Is it worth just upgrading the GPU in addition to better cooler and case, leaving the rest of the parts to be the same?

d. Do I need to buy a new pc? (This would bump me down to a 1050ti which isn't really much of an upgrade or a 760)

Also please suggest me some ATX cases with a smaller form factor. Only within cooler master and Corsair. I'm not in favour of NZXT since it's insanely overpriced in India

Your CPU can handle a lot of graphics horsepower. What games do you play?

This is not a particularly good PSU, you could change it out. 650 watts is plenty but VS is sorta cheap.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

While you won't see the "full" potential of a 1060 or 1660 Ti on that chip, it is still quite an upgrade compared to what you have now.  As others have said, you should definitely pickup a better PSU.  Corsair is a great brand, but that particular PSU is uh... not one of their finest models.

Then when you get around to upgrading your system later, you'll feel like you have a brand new video card again.  Same thing happened to me going from an i7 3930k to an i9 9900k with a GTX 1080 Ti Hybrid on both.  It's insane how much I've gained FPS wise in games that are CPU-dependent.

Primary Rig:

CPU: AMD 7800X3D @ Stock PBO - Mobo: Gigabyte X670E AORUS Master

2 x 48GB G.Skill Trident Z Royal 6400MHz CL32 1.35V @ 6200MHz CL28-37-32-30 1.5V (still tuning)

CPU Cooler: EK AIO that will be being replaced when I get the chance - PSU: eVGA P2 1200W

GPU: Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC @ either 2595MHz @ 900mV or 2970MHz @ 1070mV

Case: Thermaltake View 91 - SSDs/HDDs: 1 Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, 2 990 Pro 2TB M.2s, 1 990 Pro 4TB M.2, 1 TeamGroup Cardea Z440 2TB M.2, 1 Seagate EXO X10 10TB HDD

Monitor: Samsung Odyssey G9 49" Super-Ultrawide 240Hz Monitor

Mainly AAA titles and a few online games, recently started playing Apex legends, I'm getting 50-60 fps on lowest textures rest everything set to high, AC odyssey locked at 30fps low texture rest everything set to high at 720p

Well the 4790k can struggle in newer titles, I think it's worth getting something new like a 1660 ti and seeing how it does for you.

Even a stock 4790k doesn't bottleneck a 2080ti THAT much, certainly no worse than AMDs present offerings, and especially with an overclock. Frametime isn't stellar, but I think it's liveable.

A 1660 ti or 2060 or even a 2080 are perfectly within reason with a 4790k.

Grab a 1660/2060 and enjoy at least two more years of 1080p/1440p gaming, IMO.

You mean 2 years for the GPU or the cpu? Because I'm pretty sure that my mobo is only upgradable to 5th gen CPUs, so if I need to change the cpu then along with it goes the mobo

Yes, you can probably skip 8/9th gen Intel/Ryzen 1/2/3 completely if you have a decent GPU, and are just gaming.

Guys, I just looked up the specs of GTX 1660. It's a GDDR6 GPU, does ga-z97-d3h-p mobo support GDDR6?

There's no lack of support for a given generation of video card in terms of VRam support. As long as your board's video card slot/s is/are PCI-e x16 Gen 3 (which 99% of boards made in the last 6-7 years are), your board can run any modern card.
