I do astrophotography (with a telescope, not the silly milkyway landscape stuff) and am running out of storage. Mostly because for imaging the sun i use whats the equivelent of a 5k 16bit video camera and in a matter of minutes I have a few hundred GB video.

I'm wanting to get some sort of storage array but not sure what to get. I had a dell md3200i for awhile but I hated using iscsi and it was far too loud considering I was not constantly pulling and uploading data. Is there a relativly cheap (not including drives) and simple storage array? I dont really care how I connect to it as I really only use one computer, so it can be hard wired or a nas.

My basic requirements are, relatively easy to configure, low idling fans, 12x3.5" bays minium.

Main Computer: Intel 9900k, Asus Maximus XI Formula, Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 4x16GB 3000MHZ C15, EVGA GTX1070 Hybrid, Corsair HX850i, Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic, 26TB

2: Xeon 2695 V3, Asus x99-A II, Corsair Vengeance Pro 4x8GB 2666 C15, Corsair RX750

3: Dell R510 8-Bay, dual x5675, 16GB ECC, 8x600GB 15k SAS

kind of always wanted on of these -

Yeah that looks nice, I would love one but thatch too expensive especially considering I already have a lot of drives.

May want to have a look at: https://www.45drives.com/products/

I'd get something you can expand to more than 10-12 drives. Can start with fewer drives, can add as you go.

Yes I agree, 12 drives is my minimum and I would prefer a much larger array but money is my limiting factor.

I dont mind if its a mostly empty case where I have do do all the hardware stuff, like I mentioned its just complicated software configuration I want to avoid because iscsi seriously drove me to insanity and was absolute overkill for how I was using it. I have been thinking about moving my current computer into a rack mount case so something like that could at least hold a handful of drives.
