HDD Sound?

Go to solution Solved by anon_user231231,

So when your laptop is on battery power, Windows has a feature that will stop the HDD from spinning to save power. Then it only starts up when it needs to do something from the disk, but this means the HDD will be slower since it has to ramp up to the RPM it needs (usually 5400 RPM for laptops)

The HDD will only go from 0-5400 RPM and stays at 5400RPM.

When you plug in the laptop, Windows is like "hey I don't need to save power anymore" so it will run the HDD all the time to speed up performance.

You can go into the "Power Options" of the PC and under "When my PC is plugged in", somewhere in the advanced settings there's one called "turn off my hard disks" (setting it to 0 means keep spinning always)

Switching to an SSD will completely remove the noise as they make no sound at all.

Hello Linus Tech Tips

First of all, im a big fan! I have spend hours watching the "show" on youtube :D

I have this "problem" with my new laptop (an Asus Strix Scar II GS504GL) which i'm very happy with! But i really hope you guys can help me, or someone on the forum perhaps? I'll put up a link so you can hear what im talking about https://youtu.be/In5ym29Pgjo

When my laptop is plugged in, the HDD makes this sound, but when i remove the power supply it is almost dead silent? what is causing this? I know that the HDD is a moving part, but does it spin faster or does it get too much power or something? If anyone can give me an explanation, that would be very helpfull :D

And would it help if i switched out the HDD for a SSD? i really hate the noise obviously xD

It could be the fan. The hdd doesn't change speed when the laptop is plugged in. It could be turning off to save power and when you plug in it probably stops doing that. It's not getting too much power or anything and they aren't capable of changing speed.

HDD will never sieze to stop working in windows even if microsoft has that setting on. It will stop turning only if you hibernate and standby it! The hdd is steady at rpms. you think it is the hdd but it would propably be the dvdrom drive or a fan. clean the fan, remove the dvds fro mthe dvd drive.

Thanks so much for the answers!

I'll switch to an SSD, which i was gonna do anyway ?

And to ckinfos, its not the fans for sure, the laptop is brand new, and im OCD with cleaning (also my hardware) ?

But it makes sense to me with the windows power saving mode for the HDD ?

I'll try switching the setting when i get home from work, and reply again ?
