Hello everyone!

I am trying to setup and old computer for storage. I want a place to keep all my family's photos on that can be access anywhere in the world. I am currently using a system called owncloud on ubuntu on a raid 1 which is good but very clunky and i personally don't like it.

I would love to have a folder on all my family members computers that will access the server straight away. I know this is fairly simple when on a local network but i;m getting stuck when it comes to outside this. How would i go about setting up active directory storage that can be accessed anywhere in the world?

I know dropbox/onedrive etc would be a lot easier but i have maybe 10+TB of family videos/photos etc that id rather run at home than pay a monthly fee for a company to do this.

What things would i need in place for this to work? A VPN?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Active directory is completely different, and is not what you are looking for.

You either need to be able to VPN into your home network, or host these files offsite in a cloud based solution.

Another option though is using Plex and paying the monthly subscription fee to access anywhere.
