compatibility with ram

Go to solution Solved by LogicWeasel,

Since you're dealing with a CPU that's over 7 years old now I'd think about replacing the CPU/Mobo/RAM before dumping more than $50 into RAM for a dead-end platform, the RAM speed will not fix the fact that the CPU is now a bottleneck on that GTX 1080 Ti.  It is also worth a quick check of craigslist to see if someone's trying to get rid of DDR3 as you could score a replacement for cheap.  Otherwise you have three main options, and I would strongly favor the first one (unless this is a good time to use this as an excuse to get all new CPU/Mobo/RAM in which case do that instead):

Option 1: $43.99   Replace the stick that died and get a nice matching stick of Vengeance to go back to 16GB of Corsair 1600Mhz

Option 2: $72.99   Get a faster kit without hitting diminishing returns, if you really just want to get rid of your 8GB stick of Corsair Vengeance

Option 3: $94.99   This is the go-HAM option as you're getting DDR3-2133 running at 1.5 Volts, not bad, but it's throwing money at almost no real gain

Cooler Master HAF X case

i7-3770 k CPU 3.50 ghz

MSi  z77a g45 thunderbolt  motherboard

Corsair vengeance 1600 mhz 16 gigs 2x8 ram

Corsair H100i second gen aio cooler

ASUS ROG 1080 ti Strix edition GPU

Corsair gs 700 power supply

2 Noctua static pressure fans mounted in push on aio

1 high airflow Noctua venting out back of case

microsoft 7 ultimate 64 bit

ASUS ROG PG279Q  monitor

My issue is I had a stick of ram die and I built this rig awhile back and just thought hey why not upgrade ram so I want to get corsair vengeance pro 2400mhz 16 gigs 2x8 ddr3 ram. But on pc part picker it says it is to much volts for my cpu is  there a way to get this to work with no bad effects or should i just go 32 gigs of vengeance or should i just get 16 gigs of new vengeance ram any knowledgeable insight would be very helpful and appreciated

  • The Corsair - Vengeance Pro 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR3-2400 Memory operating voltage of 1.65 V exceeds the Intel Ivy Bridge CPU recommended maximum of 1.5 V+5% (1.575 V). This memory module may run at a reduced clock rate to meet the 1.5 V voltage recommendation, or may require running at a voltage greater than the Intel recommended maximum.

If you're overly concerned about it try to find ram that is lower stock voltage. In reality it shouldn't make a huge difference unless your motherboard is junk. If nothing else you can just run it at 2133MHz at 1.55V or such and it should work with no issues.

But, being on the side of caution and getting a lower rated kit is smart.

Primary Rig:

CPU: AMD 7800X3D @ Stock PBO - Mobo: Gigabyte X670E AORUS Master

2 x 48GB G.Skill Trident Z Royal 6400MHz CL32 1.35V @ 6200MHz CL28-37-32-30 1.5V (still tuning)

CPU Cooler: EK AIO that will be being replaced when I get the chance - PSU: eVGA P2 1200W

GPU: Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC @ either 2595MHz @ 900mV or 2970MHz @ 1070mV

Case: Thermaltake View 91 - SSDs/HDDs: 1 Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, 2 990 Pro 2TB M.2s, 1 990 Pro 4TB M.2, 1 TeamGroup Cardea Z440 2TB M.2, 1 Seagate EXO X10 10TB HDD

Monitor: Samsung Odyssey G9 49" Super-Ultrawide 240Hz Monitor
