memory issues caused by cpu ?

SciMunk

Hello,

So I recently started having lot of BSOD caused by what I think is memory corruption, however,it seem more complicated than just a bunch of faulty stick as all my test ended up with weird result.

I've built a workstation about a year ago with these specs :

TR 1950x

32GB 3200mhz Ram

Extreme zenith

everything was working perfectly, until I added 32more gb of ram few months ago (exact same ram as the original 32gb)

and this is where thing started to get craz, BSOD about every hour, game crash frequently, etc...

so naturally, I downloaded memtest and started running some test.

first with the 8stick plugged in

(8 stick ) test came out with lot of memory error, as expected.

so to find which stick was faulty, I started with the new 4 stick I've recently bought, seem that seemed like the logical choice since crash started with them :

(4 recent ram stick ) result : 0 error

that basically was a surprise to me, so I tested the 4 initial stick then :

(4 old ram stick) result : 0 error

well, so maybe the error is the MB slot ?

I try that by first doing the test with 5 stick, then 6 up to 8 again.

the error we're particularlly random with 5 and 6 stick :

sometime, the test came with 0 faulty address, sometime, a lot.

7 and 8 stick alway came out with lot of error.

so, with these result, I concluded that the MB may be faulty and proceed to buy a replacement.

and that when i realised it haven't fixed the problem at all, the exact same issues happened, the exact same test were done with the same result as the first MB.

so this end up with the last possibily, can the CPU have channel issues ? it there a way to test it without buying a new CPU ? it still under warranty, but I cannot not have a workstation as I need it to do my job.

I would buy a new cpu and send this one to replacement if I was sure this could fix my problem, but is there a way to test that ? could there still be a chance that the ram is faulty despict working perfectly with only 4 stick (new or old) ?

Thanks for the help!

First gen ZEN is hard to run so many sticks at 3200. Have you tried loading a different (slower) XMP profile and/or increasing the RAM voltage?

hmm, I haven't considered that , I'll try when I get back home.

that would explain why the faulty address we're so random.

but aren't the MB usually take care of adjusting the voltage to avoid these issues ?

Doesn't matter if the motherboard can power it if the CPU just can't keep up. Given how you only had these issues with 7 or 8 sticks installed it may be a case where one or two memory controllers can't keep up with two sticks attached and start spewing errors.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So, I first tried to up the voltage from 1.35 to 1.4 (was using tne DOCP profile of 3200mhz) and the mem test got berserk with the error, not sure if I did something wrong, never really touched any of these bios value before

I then tried to change the ram frequency to 3000mhz still using the DOCP profile of 3200mhz and this time memTest haven't showed any error (well, may still be a false positive).

I'll keep it that way if this is stable, but is there something else I can try to restore my lost 200mhz ? Doing lot of particle simulation and feel like I'm gonna take a hit on the speed.

anyway, thanks a lot for the help !

It's possible the sticks are slightly different, my pc has 4x4gb of ddr3 vengeance and one has memory on one side of the pcb, and the rest don't, one has higher density memory chips and all the model numbers are different. It's possible the cpu is broken, In linus' video when he dropped the $10k cpu some of the memory lanes just didn't work at all and didn't show all the memory, but it could sometimes work with crashing or errors in your case.

all my 8 stick are the exact same model, reducing the frequency fixed the crash so far, there wasn't any problem with detection or compatbility, just randomly corrupted address.

Yeah ryzen has problems with memory speed. What frequency was it at and what did you set it to?

Yeah that should fix the problem. 1st gen ryzen doesn't really like 3200 MHz as 191x7 said,.
