Power Supply Size

Go to solution Solved by mariushm,

Your computer may have a proprietary power supply, which would make it difficult if not impossible to replace the power supply with another one.

Determine first if your power supply is properietary, or SFX, or ATX.

If yours is the slim kind with a kind of square-ish power supply, then most likely that's a proprietary power supply.

That i5 and a 2060 is a bottleneck waiting to happen. You'll need a good CPU as well.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

I can't tell from that.

Is it too hard to look in the back of your pc to figure out what size power supply you have? Is it too hard to remove the panel and look in the insides?

Looking on Google Images, you most likely have a custom power supply and the motherboard also has custom power connectors, so even if you transplant the motherboard and everything into a regular case that would accept a regular power supply, you would still not be able to connect the power supply to the motherboard

Here's the power supply if the google image is correct, note the square shape, proprietary:

Here's what seems to be the power connector on the motherboard, it's not the regular 24 pin atx connector:

so you're out of luck.

You'd have to replace motherboard and case and power supply if you want a better video card.

Do i really need to change the case? Can i not just upgrade the PSU and motherboard?

I had little research and I think i can get a new ITx power supply with an adapter that lets me connect it to the motherboard. And just connect my new GPU

Your power supply uses the Thin Form Factor, TFX. Only TFX power supplies are physically compatible with your system. Preferably good quality 350W+ TFX unit, which should include a PCIe connector if your GPU requires. Make sure the PSU is using DC-DC converters which will help with compatibility in your system.

300W may be sufficient.

Your motherboard connector is proprietary, though. It's a 10-pin as opposed to the regular 24-pin connector. It includes three +12V, three ground, one ground and the PSU_ON cable which is green, (yes, only 8 of the 10 pins are actually used). You'll need an adapter. Something like this would work. Just make sure it matches the pin-out on your current cable.

Yes, you do as your case don't support ATX PSU or even SFX...

BUT:
When you have to replace the Motherboard, you can also replace the CPU as well as you only have something that's comparable to a 74€ AMD CPU -> Ryzen 3/1200

So keeping that makes no sense.

And as @fasauceome mentioned, your CPU isn't that good...

There are no TFX PSU with PCIe connector.

There are no good quality TFX units, the best is OKish.

There are no greater 350W TFX units.

Because they are mostly used in low profile/half height Desktop Cases.

So the best you can do is:
a) upgrade to a Standard Size AM4 Motherboard, for example ASROCK B450M PRO4 (~75€)

If you have the money a Ryzen 5/1600 or 2600, if possible the X-Variants. If not, the above mentioned Ryzen 3.

Memory should be reusable but for optimal performance a DDR4-2800 or better pair of Sticks is recommended

A decent quality PSU like Bitfenix Formula, be quiet System Power 9 or Pure Power 10 (both 400W or more).

And an AMD RX570, if possible 8GiB VRAM.

That's the best though a bit more expensive because of all the parts you need to make it a Game PC.

We have atleast the Seasonic TFX 350 and LC-Power LC400TFX V2.31.

While the LC-Power seems sketchy - no internal shots / reviews, who knows where the warranty is... The Seasonic one is quite good for a TFX unit.

And you can find HDD/molex/Sata to PCIe adapters. Be Quiet even includes an adapter in their TFX 300w unit.

You won't be able to fit more than a 2060 though, without a case/motherboard/ATX PSU upgrade.
