There's your problem.

You need to go into msConfig > Boot > Advanced options > Number or processors.

Check the "number or processors" and manually select from a drop-down the number of CPU cores detected by windows.

Note the 9700K is hyperthreaded, so you will need to select "12" as the number of processors even though there are only 6 physical cores present. Windows can't really tell the difference between a core and a thread at startup so select "12" as the number of processors.

Reboot.

Now you should see all 6 cores 12 threads available.

9700K is not hyperthreaded.

As you can see there are only 6 cores. Where are the 2 other cores? Same thing in msconfig and windows task manager..... Ive reset cmos and updated bios.....

How do i get windows to understand this is not an 8600k, but an 9700k... ?

That's weird. What does the CPU-Z show?

HWInfo does display it as 9700k, but cores are missing...

Could it be that the missing cores are disabled?

Im not even gonna bother to check, when 3 out of 3 monitors say the same thing, i bet its windows related. If i reformat windows i bet it wil work. Im just looking for an other answer. Dont feel like deleting all my files and so forth.

did you upgrade from a lower core processor?

This has happened to me before. I upgraded a windows 7 machine from a phenom ii x4 to a phenom ii x6. After the upgrade, the two extra cores never showed up in windows.

yes, from an 8600k to 9700k

9700k does not have hyper threading, it's just 8C/8T CPU... Although your suggestion still might apply

I almost made the same mistake.

I found the solution, go into msconfig and uncheck number of prosessor, reboot, then check and select how many, then reboot.

You only need to uncheck it and reboot, then Windows will use the max cores by default. Checking the box and selecting the max cores is redundant and most likely how OP ended up with this issue in the first place if they had set it to 6 with their previous 8600K...
