Adding 8gb RAM in single channel to 16gb RAM dual bad idea?

Go to solution Solved by RobbinM,

That platform only supports dual channel.

You will have to populate 2 or 4 slots. Both channels have to have the same configuration. Channel A can be 8+4GB if channel B is 8+4GB but A=8+1 and B=8+4 will not work in dual channel mode. A=8+8 and B=8GB will also not work.

An extra set of 2 sticks of 4GB will still yield dual channel.

An extra set of 2 sticks of 8GB will too,

choose what you like ;)

Is that a bad idea. I want to go for 24gb, but was wondering if that's a problem?

That's not a problem, just be careful with placement and speeds(if you have 3 identical sticks it shouldn't have any problems, though).

So as long as I have my two 1600mhz 16gb in dual channel, I can purchase one 8gb stick and place in dual channel and it wont be a problem?

Nope. Dual channel will only work with both channels being occupied by the same size and amount of ranks.

But I do have my current RAM in dual channel, but I have another channel free (two more slots)

That can't be.

It's either you have dual channel right now, or you have another channel free.

I though there was two sets of dual channel, since you can run quad channel. I have two sets of 8gb in the blue channel, there is two black slots left.

I've edited my post with a picture for more clarity.

Can you specify your platform?

There are dual, triple and quad channel platforms for consumers.
