I'm using MSI Afterburner to track temps, usage and FPS and I noticed the GPU usage and clock fluctuates a lot in Battlefield 1 (so far the only game I'm playing), for example the usage goes from 55% to 73%, then down to 65% and up to 70% and so on. The GPU clock goes from 1550MHz to 1634MHz, to 1690MHz then decreases again to 1540MHz. Sometimes the differences are even bigger. Also keep in mind that these values are completely random, just giving you an example how it works. So I am wondering if this is normal to happen, the CPU seems to be more stable, staying at around 50-60% usage.

Any ideas guys?

Laptop specs - Intel Core i7-8750H, GTX 1060 3GB and 8GB RAM single channel.

what about VRAM usage? 3GB VRAM + 8GB Single channel is not great.

My gpu does that too. Usually on indie games or less demanding parts of games. And the fps goes up and down with the gpu usage/clock in some games, not in all games. Maybe there are some settings somewhere to try and get more usage and also more fps as a result. I dont know.

I think VRAM usage is up to 2GB, not entirely sure (will edit this post if it's another value). RAM is almost completely used but I know I need more GBs, that's not the problem though.

Something is holding the card back. Hardware or software.

No reason usage would change in bf1. Clocks should only change for temp states.

Unless you are referring to going into the menu or even between the spawn in screen.

No, that happens during gameplay. Just checked VRAM usage and it seems stable around 2380 MBs.

What should I do? Tested in Unigine Benchmark and the GPU clocks are constant this time around.

Find out what’s holding the card back, like I said. Monitor the system while playing and report the usage.

Well I don’t know how to do that, hence why I asked.

Do something, like gaming and watch the system usage. Cpu, ram, storage. Everything.
