PSU Watt Enough?

TheVirusNX

Hello. My buddy sent me alot of computer parts after he upgraded his rig and I was wondering if I would need to upgrade my PSU for the graphics cards. I have a Asus Maximus VII Formula Motherboard, i7-4790K not overclocked, 32GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 1866Mhz ram, a MSI R9-290X Lightning Edition graphics card and a Corsair RM 850X power supply. I was wondering if I would be able to run another R9-290X Windforce in crossfire with the "Lightning" with my current psu?

jesus christ that card loves wattage. however, you should be able to do it. unless you are running heavy OC on both of those cards and the cpu, you will be fine.

Rig 1: i7-9700k OC'd to 5.0ghz all core | EVGA XC RTX 2080Ti | ADATA DDR4 2400mhz 4x8gb | ASUS PRIME Z370-P | Asetek 550LC 120mm | ADATA 480GB SSD & Toshiba P300 3TB | Cooler Master Masterbox MB500 | Win 10 Home | Logitech G910 Orion Spectrum, G502 Proteus Spectrum, G933 Artemis Spectrum Snow Wireless Limited Edition, Corsair MM300 Mouse Pad | 2 MSI Optix Curved 27" FHD Monitors

(before i sold the WD drive and MSI gpu - https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/11946219 171 gaming. felt good.)

Rig 2: i7-7700k Stock clocks | MSI Armor GTX 1070 | ADATA DDR4 2400mhz 2x8GB | MSI Z270 A-Pro | WD Green 240GB SSD & 2TB Seagate HDD | Thermaltake Core G21 Tempered Glass Edition | Win 10 Home | 2 HP Omen FHD 144hz 24.5" Monitors

Rig 3: i7-6700 | GT 730 & GT 645 OEM | Some random DDR4 2133mhz 2x8gb sticks | OEM Dell Mobo | WD Black 2TB HDD & Toshiba 1TB HDD | Win 10 Home | 3 27" Dell FHD Monitors

Rig 4: i7-4770 | EVGA SSC 1050ti | Some random DDR3 ram 2x2gb and 2x4gb sticks | OEM Dell Mobo | Stock Cooler | 1TB WD Black HDD | Win 7 Home

RIP

Rig 5 (dead and dismantled and sold) : i7-7820X OC'd to 4.8ghz all core | MSI DUKE 1080ti | ADATA DDR4 2400mhz 4x8gb | Gigabyte X299 UD4 PRO | Asetek 240mm AIO | WD Green 240gb SSD | Other various components that I can't remember

Ok cool. I do not plan on overclocking, I don't trust myself doing that kind of stuff haha.

Your choice of motherboard and CPU was designed for overclocking, if you don't then it's money gone to waste

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

I got it all for "FREE". My buddy upgraded his rig and gave me the motherboard, cpu, ram and both gpus. :)

Ah, now there's a good deal.

Still, the 4790k is a historic overclocker, not hard to learn and worth knowing.

Would I be able to do it "safely" with a Cooler Master Hyper Evo 212?

you'll be able to overclock your chip using it, but you'll be restricted by temps. i suggest stay on stock, then buy an AIO or much beefier air cooler, like noctua's.

Ryzen 5 1600 | Gigabyte GA-AB350M-Gaming 3 | Team Elite TForce Delta RGB 2x8 16GB 3200mhz | Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB AORUS | Fractal Design Arc Mini R2 | 2 1TB WD Blue | Wester Digital Blue 3D NAND 500GB | SeaSonic M12II 520W 80+ Bronze | CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Led Turbo | ASUS VG248QE | Rakk Kimat XT | Logitech G502 HERO | Massdrop x AKG M220 Pro | V8 Soundcard | BM800 Condenser Mic | Logitech C310

Ok thank you. I'll stick with stock then, trying to use air cooling as much as I can. I know its came a long ways *liquid cooling* but I still have a fear of leaks melting down my pc haha. I might look into the "Noctua's".

I used a hyper 212 evo for my 4790k, and managed to do 4.7GHz all cores. I was a little lucky and managed a pretty low voltage, but you could most likely do 4.5GHz on that cooler. However

You're using an Intel stock cooler for that chip, as opposed to already having the 212 evo? Depending on which stock cooler variant it is, there's a chance you could be experiencing thermal throttling. You should run some demanding games and watch temperature carefully. Stock Intel is garbage and ditching it soon is ideal.

That being said, Hyper 212 is a bad buy right now, usually at the $30 price point. A Cryorig H7 or Arctic freezer esports 33 is better

If you're not that comfortable with AIOs, then i suggested you get Noctua NH-D15. that is much better than the stock cooler. Fans from Noctua (no pun intended) are good, but i just dont like the color XD

I have the 212 Evo already. Had it for a few years.

Ah yeah that's what I'd thought. So yes, you are ready to overclock. Once you learn how to change your settings, I suggest 1.2 volts at 4.5GHz. that sounds like a decent starting point, hope it works out.
