Laptop (New)

Well, since currently my daily driver is a '09 MacBook that was purchased used and currently has a dead battery, my dad offered me to buy a laptop.

 

So, now my budget is $1500, courtesy of him, and here's a few things I know I want:

• one finger hinge
• SSD (Minimum 250, preferably 500)
• Metal construction.
• Good battery life

And here's just a list of things I usually do on my laptop:

• Video editing, a lot of it, sometimes in 4K
• Web browsing with a ton of tabs open.
• Virtual machines
• Configuring networks and such

 

Also, I usually dual boot with Ubuntu, so I'd like to have at least two storage bays/slots if possible. External storage could also work, I guess. MacOS is also ok.

Any preference on weight and display size? Is macOS a must? Mind low sRGB display? Need 16GB RAM?

Under 15.6" but above 11.6".

Windows is fine too.

I don't care about colour accuracy as long as it's not too bad.

16GB is nice, but if I get something else in return for trading it away, I'd consider going for 12, or 8.

Since you owned a Macbook before, I assume that you want a display with decent colour coverage

I use a TN $80 1080p panel for my desktop. I'll be fine with bad colour.

Eh... only if I get a significant return like a decent GPU or something like that.

 

Around 5lbs/2.5kg would be the maximum. Below that would be very nice.

Yep, Canadian duties are expensive so I'd rather not venture outside.

What about this? It saves quite a bit of money, is lighter than most, and seems like a good option.

 

I've also been looking at a few older MacBook Airs.

Only good thing compared to others is the high sRGB 400 nits display

 

Keep in mind that it has:

1. Non-upgradable RAM and no dual storage

2. TB3 but with only x2 PCIe lanes (only matters if you want to use eGPU)

3. i7-8550U CPU which don't really differ much in terms of performance (especially multi core) compared to i5-8250U

I'm asking you, which should I buy out of the few I listed above? They all basically fit my need perfectly and I have no preference over any, so I need a outside source...

TBH all models I've listed above are good models, if you find it hard to decide, choose the cheapest one.
