SO-DIMMs from an old laptop in adapters

This is most likely your problem.

So am I wrong to assume that non-ECC memory would work here and is using my current RAM causing my problem?

I have an HP Proliant ML330 G6 that works with non-ECC memory, except the fans have no idea what to do and will run at an abnormally high speed without ECC.

I've been building a PC using an HP z400 motherboard and it won't boot. When I press the power button all the fans spin up, but there is no output to the screen. When I remove the RAM and power on, the same thing happens. I can't figure out how to connect connect the little speaker that came with my case, so I have no error tones to help. I have three guesses as to what the problem may be. Either the motherboard or the CPU are not functional or I am using the wrong RAM.

I am currently using two 4gb 1600MHz ddr3 SO-DIMMs from an old laptop in adapters. After ordering the adapters I found this specification page: http://h20331.www2.hp.com/Hpsub/downloads/HP-Z400-Workstation-memory-configuration-and-optimization.pdf that says ECC memory should be used.

So am I wrong to assume that non-ECC memory would work here and is using my current RAM causing my problem?

What exactly did you change when going from Z400 to you new PC on the motherboard? Only RAM?

I'm building the PC from scratch, mostly with used parts. The only thing I owned previously was the RAM, so I thought I'd save a few bucks and use it here.

For the benefit of anyone who is having similar issues, using ECC ram as specified solved my problem. When I initially put the new ram into the motherboard, it was throwing a fit and stating that three of the four sticks of ram had failed some sort of test. This further issue was solved by simply re-slotting sticks randomly until it worked.
