Ok recently i ran cat5 through my entire home and don't know whats best to do from here. My service comes down the riser into garage, there it connects to modem and ran outside underground and up into my attic of my home. From there i connected that into a old netgear router. From the netgear router ive ran hardwire to all 6 rooms. I have four kids that want less lag! So dad thought hardwire would be best! So far its working but i have no idea how well. Questions are have i done this right? Are there specific router and modems i should be using? is there a length i should not go past with cat5? any and all help is grateful thank you

why cat 5? at least go CAT 5e.  the max length as far as I know is 100m.

Aslong as you do not exceed the maximum length of 100 meters and all your network gear is 1Gbit it should be fine

(100Mbit are fine to if your internet connection is slower than that and you do not need to transfer files over your network to an NAS or another PC)

 

EDIT:

If it is really CAT5 than there is no reason for using 1Gbit network gear.

 

I cannot recommend using CAT5 because its not futureproof but if that is what you got for now its ok.

ANd it is definitelly better than WLAN

physically, it's a device with a bunch of ethernet ports. Functionally it takes the data from one port, usually from router and distributes it throughout network

If you have more that two cables to plug in, I would not plug them all into your router...use a switch.

ok yea i need a switch then! just not one with that many ports i don't think! im running a total 7 or 8 hardwire lines. And yes as of now it go's from modem into router an then down to the boys rooms ,front room ,kitchen etc.   i can see what modem i have but not going in the attic today its too cold!    MOTOROLA SBG6782AC is the modem

I would look at a 16 port switch then to allow for additional expansion if that's needed. You can generally pick them up for about $50 to $100 depending on the model but just unmanaged is all you need so that should bring the price closer to the $50 price point.

Why two?  Routers usually contain at least a 4 port switch!
