I have an Optiplex GX 280 and I wanted to throw a 3.6ghz Pentium 4 in it but when I try to boot up the system it says incompatible CPU detected. System halted. Can I put the CPU in it or will it just not work? (keep in mind its an LGA 775 P4 not Socket 478.)

Download the manual for your PC and look at the supported CPU list. Make sure you have the latest version of the manual.

If it's supported, you probably have to update the BIOS before puuting the new CPU in.

Oops forgot to quote ^^
