Ryzen gen2 or wait?

Hi guys,

CPU frustrations:

  1. I am trying to decide if I should buy X470(itx) motherboard+ryzen 7 and upgrade to 3rd gen Ryzen when released, since it wasn't released on ces19.
  2. I could really benefit if they will add thunderbolt support

Motherboard frustrations:

  1. I tried to find if mb vendors will release new boards for 3rd gen Ryzen(since PCIe 4.0 is on the verge).
  2. With PCIe 4.0 for ITX, maybe I can squeeze more controllers in, if needed in the future form my 1 PCIe slot.
  3. But don't know if I can rely on new firmware speculations to enable PCIe 4.0 on 2017-2018 motherboards.
  4. I could use thunderbolt on AM4 for a extreme small factor with external GPU in the future.

The primary scope of this build is not gaming, but I might also include rtx or 1080ti.

It will have a M.2 nvme, 1-2 SSD/HDD, 16-32 RAM

So what do you guys think, is it worth it to buy now or way for it to show up in Summer?

Let me know if you want to see the part I went with.

p.s. i waited ~1yr to buy a new pc :) this is important for me.

With Respect,

George

Hi George,

First off welcome on the LTT forum!

I would say this is a personal decision. You have already waited ~1yr - Do you have a need to have a PC now, or could you wait till end Q2, start Q3 of 2019 to build this PC?

If you can, I would advise to wait a few more months and get yourself the zen2 CPU!

If you indeed can't wait, I'd go for a cheap b350 board and an APU for now, then upgrade them when Ryzen 2 drops... the resale of the APU and b350 probably won't cut you too bad. The ab350 pro 4/ab350m pro 4 from ASrock are nice enough boards BTW if you needed a recommendation.

Keep in mind Zen 2 chips will work fine in current boards, so he may not be too bad off buying a higher end board and APU now, reselling just the APU, and holding on to the board.

Right now I have an old i7 920, even older MB(3channels) 9GB ram, 550ti, some unknown PSU :))

I thought of this scenario but, it would add ~200$ maybe more(+Europe VAT)

A possibility: AMD Athlon 2xx GE would be an option or Ryzen 3/5 G to sell it more easily  + asus x470-I
