That is what you need for a 130w CPU.

Not sure if that is a standard 1366 mounting pattern or not though, but thats what the manual calls for.

Hmm I can get it for 150$ on ebay each :). I'll just try the Hyper 212 Evo.

I'm doing a new build with dual nehalems but the motherboard i've got appears to have non-standard cpu cooler holes.

The cpu backplate goes over the holes and seems to reduce the size of them. The motherboard is Intel's s5520hc.

Can I just use a standard cpu cooler like the Hyper 212 Evo with this?

Looking at the front of the motherboard the backplate sort of protrudes out from the holes, like the holes are extended. It is about 3mm.

Just use coolers that supports the socket, they will fit in some way (either replacing the stock backplate with their own, or somehow compatible with the stock backplate)

For standard motherboards, that is true. The motherboard I have is obviously NOT STANDARD. I've already bought a couple a coolers and they didn't fit. Looking at standard lga1366 motherboards you will see that the mounting holes are DIFFERENT.

Jurrunio, if you aren't even looking at the pictures provided or reading the entire topic why are you commenting? Your answers are useless(view topic RAM Clip Help)

I said that because I managed to get a Cooler Master V8 that was on a X58 Sabertooth to work on a EVGA W555, a dual socket LGA 1366 board. Admittedly I only tried one socket (only have 1 CPU), but it mounted in like it did in the Sabertooth.

If your coolers don't work, maybe you are using the LGA 115X mounts rather than the 1366 mount? Or else you could scavenge server heatsinks from ebay and just add fans onto them, cable ties can help with that.

Sorry about the second part of my comment, I was a bit salty(and tired).

Thanks though, this really helps.

They can be found for ~$50.  I think CDW has them for $~60.

For my LGA 771 build I ended up plunking down like $90 for coolers because every dual LGA 771 board I have seen mounts the HSF to the case and not the MB.  Very odd boards those are.  And the 1U heatsinks I had were impractical for desktop/workstation use.

  • 2 years later...

I realise this is a rather old topic, and that I'm probably necroposting, but I felt it was a good idea to reply anyway as I just encountered this very same issue, and found the solution in the manual for the motherboard. Seems the backplate can in fact be removed. Even if this post is years old, I honestly hope this helps, as there is surprisingly little information about this rather commonly found board out there.
