I'm debating my next move for Camera Equipment upgrades.  Currently I film on a Panasonic Lumix G7, primarily at 4k/24fps (100Mbps bitrate, 8-bit 4:2:0 of course).  Lately I've been running into two problems, one being a lack of dynamic range and the other being inability to nail critical focus when manual focusing.  Since all I have is the little screen and iffy focus peaking to nail my focus, I waste a lot of footage on being JUST off focus.

I'm just trying to decide what is the most logical next purchase for my gear.  A Recorder/Monitor would allow me better chances of nailing focus more often.  Thus less wasted footage.  As well as allowing me to record at a better bitrate for (slightly) better post processing.  Also I could record to SSDs for overall more affordable large media (relative to speed) and improved workflow. Transferring 64GB of  footage off of V30 SD cards is cumbersome. Especially on big shoots where I have multiple full cards.

However a Recorder won't magically make my G7 a GH5.  To really get the color improvement that I desire, I need something shooting 4:2:2 10-Bit on a better codec.  I've got a few shoots coming up this year where color reproduction is a pretty important factor.  My G7 is simply no good at this.  I have gotten a color correction workflow I like, but I know it is not true to life color. It is just grading the G7's footage to a level that is a vibrant finished product and faking a decent dynamic range.

I know I'll end up with both a Recorder AND a GH5 before the year is out, but I just cannot decide which should be my purchase priority.

Does anyone have experience using an Atomos on a lower end camera?  Was it basically pointless?  I guess that is what this boils down to.  I feel like at the end of the day I need to just buckle down and get the GH5 since then I can use an affordable monitor with that, but a Recorder could be use with either camera and gain the SSD/ProRes recording benefit.

Ryzen 7 2700X , Asus Prime X570-Pro, Bykski CPU Block, AMD Vega 56, Barrow GPU block, g.Skill Ripjaws V 32GB PC2800, Dual EKWB SE360 Radiators, Corsair RM750x PSU. All in a Lian-Li PC011 Dynamic XL case.

I personally think you should go for a new camera (GH5 as you mentioned?) since the recorder as you said won‘t give you a huge improvment, and since the GH5 records with quite a high bitrate internally I think it‘s the better choice.
