FPS dropping MX150

Go to solution Solved by KarathKasun,

You can try a software solution like ThrottleStop.  It allows you to disable turbo, which is what setting CPU max frequency to 90% does.

Hey Guys,

this week I bought my new laptop Asus Zenbook 14 UX433FN with Intel Core i7-8565U, 16GB RAM and Nvidia MX150. I don't want to game on this very offen on the highest quality. But I want to some light gaming. Mostly Overwatch and some other light games.

So and there is the problem. I know, this GPU isn't powerful for playing games in High settings, but it is powerful enough for 60FPS in Overwatch on FullHD and medium or low settings. Judging by the rewiews, my laptop have no problem with this, but I have problems. I try to play Overwatch on 720p and low settings and where was many FPS drops. It is smoothly for like 1-2 minutes and after that I have FPS drops to 10-15FPS. Same with Mafia II what is 9 years old game.

I try:

Reinstall graphics drivers

Configure Nvidia Graphics Settings to maximum performance and other settings to improve performance

Plug laptop diractly to power socket

Change some Value in regedit according to some YouTube videos

Nothing works. Can you please help me with this?

Thanks for every reply.

This might be a thermal throttling issue if it only drops framerate after a few minutes, try running games with a desk fan blowing at the bottom of the laptop and see if that helps

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I try 3DMark Demo and I score 890 points... With my old desktop where I play Overwatch smoothly on FullHD medium settings I score 600 points. So this GPU is powerful enough for this gaming. And it might be a thermal throttling, but I could see FPS drops mostly in action scenes for example shotting battle in Overwatch.

Hello to everyone,

I also bought this laptop, but with i5-8265U and 8 GB  of RAM. And I'm also experiencing this issue. I just wanted to play Counter Strike, nothing too demanding, but there's something weird going on. Like you, i have a great 120 FPS on medium first 5 minutes of gameplay and then it drops drastically, to 15 - 30 FPS.

I tried measuring the temps and it seems like there is some kind of a thermal limit on GPU. From what I've observed it doesn't go past 70 degrees. Also CPU is throttled heavily but, it can go past 90 without any limitation. I tried using Afterburner but I cant undervolt nor change a power limit.

I had some luck with Throttlestop, but all i could do was delay the inevitable - after some time, FPS dropped and never came back. Plus whenever i tried pushing CPU to it's limits, my touchpad basically stopped working. My unit also suffers from terrible coil whine.

I have 14 days to return it and I'll probably do that, but until then, if anyone has any suggestions, I can try whatever you come up with. But as of right now, I don't see what else i could do. Asus probably chewed more than they can eat by putting powerful components to a chassis that small.

Use Throttlestop to undervolt your cpu to decrease overall heat, then use msi afterburner to set a static clock at a lower voltage than what your mx150 runs under load. A repaste is highly recommended, but I can understand the stigma of not wanting to open your laptop up.
