I'm going to be using a Dell PowerEdge T110 as a test/experiment box.

The cooling on it comes from one large rear-mounted exhaust fan that pulls air through a shroud over the CPU (and heat sink) and RAM.

(crappy pic here, https://darajo.com/image/cache/catalog/Products/Servers/Dell-Server/Dell-T110-side-600x600.jpg )

I don't think the BIOS is intelligent enough to know if I replace the fan with something else, so my thought was dump the shroud, CPU heatsink and fan, and going with an AIO water cooling solution.

My question for those that have AIOs, are they quieter than normal case fans? As you may know, server fans can get loud...I"m looking to reduce the noise, not only from this one, but if the experiment works, from my T310 and T410 as well.

An AIO can in theory be quieter than a fan, but if you can't control the rpm of the pump or fans on the AIO, it'll likely be louder or just as loud as what you got right now.

Are the fan(s) speeds controlled by software? Or a rheostat? Or something else?

I'd get a midrange aircooler instead

At least just as quiet, waaaay less expensive and the reduced top end cooling performance shouldn't be an issue since the chips in the T110 are not exactly the power hungry options.

Any suggestions as to one?
