External SSD and Steam

I am having a problem with my external SSD. I have installed steam on my external T5 SSD. Whenever I switch off the laptop and turn it back on, the steam logo is replaced be a paper with a fold in it. I also cannot start steam. Sometimes I get steam will not connect to the internet even though I am connected. Sometime steam just does not load.
