I'm asking this on behalf of my friend. I don't know the answer either, so I've come to ask for your guys' help. He wants to know the following:

"How much more performance in games would a stock FX-8350 give me over a phenom X4965 OCed to 4.0? Also, how overclockable is a fx-8350 with a coolermaster 212+ plus? Basically, is the upgrade justifiable?"

Thanks

you would definitly get a performance boost. you oc it to about 4.2-3. My friend upggraded his i5 760 to this and love it.

Cool. I passed that on to him. He will like the sounds of that.

Thanks!

FX 8350 can be overclocked to 5Ghz without a water cooler, get a air cooler for 70-80$ eg Phanteks and buy some high grade/quality thermal paste and you can then overclock it to 5Ghz on air without needing a water cooling that needs a lot of maintenance.

i would say it depends on what gfx card your gonna pair it with. if its a low mid range gpu then you wont get much of a boost in games but productivity will give up to 50% more.

if your gonna pair it with a high end gfx card it will alleviate any potential bottlenecks between the cpu and gpu on most games.

if its just a gaming pc then its likely the platform jump and cpu cost wont really be worth it. but if he's doing video editing, 3d/photoshop then it will be worth the money.

also if your gonna oc on a hyper cooler buy a decent fan. the stock 1 is a noisy mofo...

It will in most probability be slower, a phenom II 965 overclocked to 4.0 Ghz is an incredibly capable gaming processor.

The upgrade is not worth it unless he will be able to make use of all 8 cores, an example would be productivity work loads or next-gen games & some current games like Crysis 3, Far Cry 3 & BF3 .

Bulldozer was slower, this is Piledriver. Don't mix those two generations. FX 8350 is faster and better considerably.
