Help with server

Go to solution Solved by FitnessOgre,

As a long time server admin, my advice to you is especially with HP is to talk to your sales guy. Don't be afraid to ask these guys questions, they know what their kit can do. However the server you are looking for is probably going to cost more than $10K for those spec's.

A few recommendations;

1) If your company is on HP the DL380 Gen 9 2U server will give you the most options in terms of disk and space. Lots of room for extra NICs and or FC or whatever if you ever need to connect it to a SAN.

2) 128GB of RAM would be a minimum. Always get more RAM when you can.

3) To get the 5TB RAID 10 you will need either 10 x 1TB SAS disks for the RAID 10. Or 6 1.8TB SAS disks. I would also suggest that you get a separate pair of disks for your OS running a RAID1. 300GB seems to be standard small size for basic disks.

Good luck!

Hey guys. I really need your help deciding which server should I get for a software we are buying at work. That software company had the following requirements:

Cores: 12 Cores 3.0 Ghz

Memory: 96 GB

Storage: 5TB RAID 10

IOPS: 3200

Operating System: Red Hat 6.x 64 bit

My company would only purchase HP servers and the budget should be around 10k +- 2K. Frankly this is my first server build and I got lost in HP's website with all the servers' models and all the components you could choose from ?

What kind of software is going to run on this? A transactional DBase? It sort of makes a difference when choosing servers. You don't have to tell me the name of the software package, just what it does...

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Rather than asking joe random folks here, who may, or may not have any clue on this sort of thing, I'd call up redhat and ask then which HP server they suggest.

This accomplishes two things

(1) It will ensure you are getting expert advice

(2) if anything goes wrong with the install or server, no one will blame you for making the wrong decision.

We use Dell servers at work so I can't point you in the right direction HP-wise.

I ended up contacting all 3, hp, dell and redhat. No luck with any except hp and their recommendation was "ProLiant ML350 Gen10"

I'll see what can my company do regarding the budget. I'm thinking we could configure it according to what he have available and then later on upgrade its hardware in the future.
