stepping down on resolution will not increase the maximum refresh rate of a panel. i'm afraid you're stuck with 60Hz on this one, no matter what resolution you play at.

If you want 1440p@144Hz, why didn't you just get a monitor that does that. 1440p will also not look the best on a 4k panel, since it's not an integer fit.

It's running stock at the moment, because it runs hot and its enough (also low speed fan profiles). I went to 4.8 or so when playing around with OC, but later reverted to stock.

According to Aida,  my CPU OCed vs a stock 8700k is faster at CPU Queen bench and keeps up in all other tests.  You will gain a lot by OCing to a nice 4.6Ghz.  Also what are your load temps ?  Open a door or a window, or even open the side case door...Also what CPU cooler are you using ?

It already boosts to 4.5 GHz, 100 MHz more won't really make a difference. I'm running a custom loop, but it's hot (think high 70s) because of a) very low RPM fan curve b) limited airflow because of the case being pretty much completely glass, and I just don't have a need for an overclock (yet). Games still manage around 100FPS or so on average, which I'm happy with.

Let's not stray off topic though.
