2.5" vs 3.5" USB drives

I need 4 2TB drives that will be plugged in via USB, is it advisable to get 2.5" 2TB portable drives so I can use them without an external power source or will that put a lot of load on the PC if I plug in all 4 drives via USB at the same time?
Should I get 3.5" 2TB drives instead with a external power adapter?
