WD Reds / Storage Advice

Darren

Hey guys,

I'll be buying some extra storage soon, and eventually a raid array in the next few months. Just wondering what the thoughts on the WD Reds are? Nothing too critical will be stored on here, as photos are backed up on cloud services as well as University work, it'll mostly be media.

  • Are Reds any good?
  • Are they overkill for RAID purposes?
  • Suggestions?

Ideally replies from someone featuring on the LTT 10TB+ topic would be great, but any input is welcome!

Reds are good for raid. They are designed for it. Go for raid 5 or 6 depending on your drives. Get a raid card.

Sweet, glad that's clarified. What's a reputable brand as far as RAID controllers go? I'm seeing LSI and Intel all over the place. Also, if I get something like an 8 port RAID card, am I able to swap it out with a larger one later on? Or will that break things?

Thanks for the responses so far!
