I am building a new server for my house, but I need it to have a relatively beefy CPU, and at least 4GB of ram, I live in the US and I have about $300 for a CPU, motherboard, RAM, and CPU cooler if I can get a decent one in the budget just to keep it from being too loud. The motherboard has to be a micro-ATX or smaller, and has to have at least one gigabit Ethernet, I don't need ECC RAM, and I would prefer an Intel CPU because some of the programs that I would be running on it favor Intel CPUs by a decent margin. If any other information is needed just ask, and thanks in advance for the help.

Edit: I currently have a socket 775 motherboard and 2GB of DDR2 so if you could find a high performing CPU on that socket and 2GB more RAM that would also work, but it would probably have to be one of the highest chips on that socket for my needs.

I already have a case, psu, peripherals, hard drives and os, yes.

Haven't included a cooler for two reasons. First, the stock cooler is reasonably quiet. Second, no case limitations were provided.

I looked around at some friends old PCs and I can get an i7 920 for $40 but the motherboard it was in doesn't work anymore, would it be worth getting it and finding a 1366 board or should I just go with a newer i5?

How do you know the cpu works?

He has already tested it in another socket 1366 motherboard and it works, but the motherboard isn't for sale because he is using it in his gaming PC.

The problem is going to be finding an LGA 1366 motherboard that cost less than $200. You will likely have to see if you can find a used motherboard.
