M.2 NVMe SSD - CPU lanes vs. chipset lanes

GamingDoc

Hey everybody,

this topic is rather confusing for me. Is there a perfromance difference between using CPU lanes vs. chipset lanes for an M.2 NVMe SSD? If so, how much? I'm planning to use only one M.2 NVMe SSD for now.

I'm looking at Asus Rampage VI Extreme vs. Asus Maximus XI Extreme mobos. Another question regarding the Maximus XI Extreme (https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/ROG-MAXIMUS-XI-EXTREME/specifications/) There is the option for a ROG DIMM.2 Module support(CPU_DIMM.2), does this use chipset lanes or CPU lanes (of which there are only 16 with a 9900K, so that would be a no-go for me).

Hope you guys can shine some light on that issue.

Always? So there isn't even an option to use CPU lanes on a x299 platform? Or does it just always use chipset lanes on Z390 (including DIMM2)?

most of the times, most of the times it's the closest to the cpu if it does use ones on the cpu

Have you bought the motherboard yet? if not I strongly suggest you to reconsider it is HEAVILY overpriced garbage, worse VRM solution on a 280+ dollars board.

Any ways, yeah it uses the chipset lanes and no there is no draw back on doing so besides NVMe only makes sense on very specific workloads that aside it's much of the same thing compared to regular SATA 3 SSD.

Don't forget to get an extra coolfin for your m.2 if your motherboard doesn't come supplied with an m.2 heatsink.. which it probably will…
( the price of the mobo suddenly registered )
If you want it special just use the same adjustments you would make when wanted to overclock for a 0.5 ghz extra ;)

Regarding the DIMM.2 slot, only the maximus XI comes with an extra heatsink unfortunately - I think it looks dope! Rampage still has cooling for regular m.2 slots
