Does it require a backplate? What motherboard is it? And which generation? Are any of the screws bent / threaded ?

Sometimes, MB have brackets already installed. Remove them by removing screws and try to screw the cooler screws to the backplate.

Yeah so for an intel stock cooler you don't need a backplate I don't think from what I'm seeing on Youtube. I can link you to the video, the CPU Cooler install starts at 4:40

What happens if you remove those screws and try to install your cooler? Why is it a problem? I would need to see pics from the front and the cooler itself, if possible.

very simple, you have to rotate each of the 4 taps 90degree otherwise it doesn't click back.

also it's easier to mount it when you press the taps in a X pattern instead of doing one side first

You either need a bigger backplate or to make sure you are inserting the cooler properly. The plastic tips in the image you show in the four corners show that at least 2 (up side of the image) are not fully inserted.

I took the cooler out and put it back in and pushing as hard as I can in the X pattern but it still won’t go back in

did you try to push the 4 taps in a cross pattern? in the picture you just did the two bottoms ones.

when you do 2 on the same side it will become much harder.

also make sure the plastic ring is against the heatsink.

EDIT: if you can get just two of them pushed in on the opposite sides you should be fine

First remove cooler. Then 'unscrew' the screws by turning clockwise. PLace the cooler in the MB and screw by tuning counterclockwise. Begin with a pattern of X:

1                  3

    COOLER

4                  2

This should keep the cooler steady.

I did push them in a cross pattern but somehow the bottom ones went in. Like I’ve said I took the cooler out and I’m pushing in an X pattern as hard as I can but it still won’t go in

there's no screwing them in, they're push pins

But you have to twist them, right? That's what I meant by "screwing". Should have said twist instead hahah.

like cesarbg showed

if you can just get number 1 and 2 or 3 and 4 in you should be fine with just two of them pushed in
