Computer is frozen!!!

Hi something happened to my computer. I tried rebooting and it took a while to log on then when it did load t showed my background, settings and Microsoft edge. None of my folders or other applications in the task bar are visible. My fans inside the computer are also going very fast. I’ve switched off my monitor and computer multiple times and waited. Please help

That could be any number of things. Can you get into safe mode? That would help narrow it down. I've forgotten the keys to press and I can't look them up at the moment. I'm thinking mash esc on startup then safe mode should be in the list.
